PSALMS 35:13 “I HUMBLED MY SOUL WITH FASTING.”
We have started our 21-day season of fasting together! Remember, this is not about religious obligation or spiritual performance…
It is about ALIGNMENT.
Fasting creates space. It quiets competing voices. It helps recalibrate our hearts toward what matters most.
Let’s address some important points.
In Scripture, fasting is the voluntary abstention from food for a spiritual purpose. It is not symbolic, metaphorical, or generalized…it is physical…the real-deal Holyfield. From Genesis to the Gospels, fasting consistently involves the denial of food as an act of humility before God.
Now, fasting is not about harming the body; it’s about reminding ourselves that our deepest sustenance does not come from what we eat, but from God Himself.
When we fast, church, we declare: “God, you are not supplemental in my life, you are essential.”
Throughout Scripture, fasting is consistently connected to moments of:
Please, my dear brothers and sisters, slow down here:
Fasting does not force God to act. It simply aligns us with His will.
If fasting leads us to pride, we have lost sight of the purpose of fasting
It trains our appetites. It exposes misplaced dependencies. It reminds us that we do not live by bread alone (or in my case, by peanut butter M&M’s alone).
There are moments when prayer feels weighty, urgent, or resisted. Fasting adds focus and seriousness, not because God is reluctant, but because we are being realigned!!
Jesus made it clear that fasting can be done the wrong way.
Fasting is not:
If fasting produces irritability, superiority, or harshness, we’ve missed the point.
True fasting produces humility, tenderness, and compassion. It should draw us closer to God and closer to people. It should not isolate us or inflate us. This has happened to me before, and this is why I share this.
Wisdom also matters. Health, season of life, and personal responsibility should be prayerfully considered. God is not honored by recklessness…He is honored by obedience.
There is something uniquely powerful when a church fasts together.
Corporate fasting:
Different people. Different needs. One collective cry: “Lord, we want You.”
When we fast together, we are not just seeking personal breakthrough; we are positioning ourselves for shared transformation. We are asking God to move among us, not just within us.
